Romania, back at the Euro, after an eight-year break. When does the competition take place and how much do tickets cost

Romania defeated Israel in the penultimate match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers, 2-1, and secured qualification for the final tournament in Germany after an eight-year break. Libertatea presents you with all the details about this tournament, which takes place in Germany in 2024.

Following the victory in the match played in Hungary, Romania qualified for the final tournament of the European Championship in Germany.

The national team is in the first position of Group I, taking advantage of Switzerland’s home draw with Kosovo.

It is the sixth tournament for the “tricolori” and the first after the one in 2016.

1. Romania at the European Football Championship

The “Tricolorii” qualified for six Euro tournaments. The first was in 1984, with a team that included, among others, Hagi, Boloni, Coras, Iorgulescu or captain Costică Ștefănescu.

2. Where to play Euro 2024

After a continental edition, with games played in several countries, the European Championship will be played in one: Germany. It won the right to hold the tournament against Turkey.

This is the third time matches have been played in Germany, after 1988 (tournament played only in West Germany) and 2020 (when Munich hosted 4 matches).

3. In which cities and stadiums Euro 2024 is played

The games will take place in 10 stadiums in 10 different cities, all over 30,000 seats.

These are the Allianz Arena in Munich (70,076 seats), where the opening match will be played, the Olympiastadion in Berlin (74,461 seats), which will also host the final, and eight other arenas.

4. When Euro 2024 is played

Euro 2024 matches will be played between 14 June and 14 July 2024. 

Group games will end on June 26 and eighth round matches will be played between June 30 and July 2. The quarterfinals are played on 5 and 6 July, the semifinals on 9 and 10 July, and the final on 14 July.

At the Euro there is no small final. Out of the 6 groups, the first two places and the best 4 3rd places qualify for the next phase.

5. Who qualified for Euro 2024

Until Romania’s qualification, recorded on Saturday, November 18, 2023, host Germany and 14 other national teams (mentioned in order of mathematical qualification to the tournament) qualified for the Euro:

Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Turkey, Austria, England, Hungary, Slovakia, Albania, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands.

There are 8 seats available for the final tournament. The top five will be finalized in the coming days, at the end of the preliminary groups. The final three will be determined in the spring, following three play-offs between unqualified teams.

6. When is the draw for Euro 2024

Romania will find out its opponents at Euro 2024 on December 2, in a ceremony to be held in Hamburg, in the Elbphilharmonie. The festivity will start at 19:00, Romania time.

7. Who will participate in Euro 2024

Edward Iordănescu, the coach of the Romanian national team, will have to make a squad of 23 players, 3 of whom will be goalkeepers.

UEFA will return to the 23-man squads after the last two finals, Euro 2020 (held in 2021) and the 2022 World Cup were played with 26-man squads.

First, because of the pandemic. The second, due to the dispute in the middle of the 2022-2023 season.

8. Where Euro 2024 will be seen in Romania

According to GSP, Romanians will be able to watch Euro 2024 on PRO TV. 

PRO TV has acquired the broadcasting rights for the next two editions of the European Football Championship, in 2024 and 2028.

Since 2016, the Euro final tournaments have been broadcast in Romania by PRO TV.

9. How much will tickets for Euro 2024 cost and where to buy them

Tickets to the 2024 European Championship will cost between 30 and 200 euros (tickets to group matches), 50 and 600 euros (opening match), 50 and 250 euros (“eighths”), 60 and 300 euros (quarterfinals), 80 and 600 euros (semifinals).

In the final, the cheapest ticket will cost 95 euros, and the most expensive will reach 1,000 euros.

Romanian fans will be able to buy tickets starting with December, through the Romanian Football Federation.

Supporters will have 2.2 million tickets available out of the 2.7 million available, and federations will receive about one million of the 2.2 million.

A first tranche of tickets could be bought as early as October, but without the certainty of Romania’s presence at the final tournament.
