Nearly 3,000 New York City employees will be fired for not getting vaccinated against COVID

The nearly 3,000 employees will be laid off Friday as they, by refusing to be vaccinated against COVID, they violated the rules imposed by city hall on its employees, the New York Times reports, according to EFE and Agerpres.

Targeted by the measure are public workers who have already benefited from a period in which they have been given the opportunity to immunize themselves and who have not yet presented proof that they have received the COVID vaccine.

They make up less than 1% of local government employees. About 370,000 people work in the public domain in New York, and about 95% of them are vaccinated against the coronavirus with at least one dose, according to New York Times data.

The vaccination mandate was introduced by Bill de Blasio, the predecessor of current Mayor Eric Adams.

According to the rule established by the City of New York, employees must get vaccinated with at least one dose in order not to lose their job. At the same time, new employees are required to be immunized with both doses of anti-COVID serum.

In fact, Friday is also the deadline by which about 1,000 employees of the municipality must present proof of vaccination with both doses.

Hundreds of people protested in New York on Monday, demanding that COVID restrictions be lifted as the deadline for vaccinating public administration employees approaches.

Other cities such as Boston and Chicago have called for the vaccination of city employees, a requirement rejected by unions and workers. In San Francisco, Washington state, and Massachusetts, hundreds of employees have lost their jobs, but most have complied with the mandatory vaccination rule.
