Gabriela Szabo cries for money from the town hall: CSM Bucharest is going through the hardest period of its existence

“The Bucharest Municipal Sports Club is going through perhaps the hardest period of its existence. The crisis period began last February, when the budget of Bucharest City Hall, the main financier of the club, was reduced.

No one can imagine the efforts that the management of CSM Bucharest has made to keep the situation under control, which has experienced a new difficult stage with the outbreak of the pandemic earlier this year… We can’t make any comparison between the last two years, which have been hellish, and the rest of the 13-year history of the Bucharest Municipal Sports Club,” Szabo wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

The former great athlete says she is doing everything she can to keep the capital city-funded club afloat.

“However, we have a clear conscience that we have done everything that has depended on us to make things work. Very difficult decisions have been made for the women’s handball team, the club’s flag bearer, to continue their work. We gave up the women’s volleyball team, which brought us so much joy, the men’s volleyball team, but also our club’s senior rugby team,” Szabo wrote.

She says she is the target of unjustified attacks on the club’s financial situation:

“I am sorry that in these troubled times that we all live, I have to deal with boundless viles, sick accusations, inventions from minds unable to understand anything that is going on around them.

It is not the first time I have read and marvel at what is written about me, about the gratuitous accusations that are brought to me, a man who has done so much for Romanian sport and for Romania. A man who is at the helm of one of the most respected sports clubs in Romania, a club that I try with my colleagues to manage as healthily as possible at a time when sport is no longer a priority except for those who really love this phenomenon.”

Szabo says financial arrears to athletes are not the result of his errors.

“But in vain… The financial backlogs faced by the whole club, not just the women’s handball team, financial backlogs that exist, I have never denied them, are not the result of my errors and those of my colleagues, but of the times that we unfortunately are going through. The women’s handball team protest this weekend can be understood, even if we disagree with it. But I will never understand why some people are constantly looking for reasons just to strike at me with a lack of respect with which even common criminals are not treated,” Szabo said.

The president of CSM Bucharest accuses the offenses to which she is subjected because of the financial crisis that the club is going through.

‘I’m accused by a former club employee, who has made a habit of constantly offending me over the last two years, that, quote, ‘Szabo doesn’t even realize he’s wiped his ass with the prestige of this club’. Such statements made in the public space cannot be catalogued. Such statements can only come from a primitive hatred, from a sense of inferiority, from a deficiency of behavior that can never be directed. We wish each day to be better, more understanding, but many of us are doing exactly the opposite. Evil, mischief, physical and verbal aggression have become basic qualities of those who want to get out of anonymity, out of the daily’s glod. Too bad…,” Gabriela Szabo wrote.

At Sunday’s match against Ferencvaros in the Champions League, won 25-19, the members of the CSM Bucharest team protested against the financial backlogs, entering the field with white shirts that read “Respect our work!”, “Respect your promises!”.
