At least 7 people have died in Indonesia after several tourists tried to take a selfie in the boat

At least seven people drowned on Sunday and two others are missing in Indonesia after a boat full of tourists from the Kedung Ombo Basin capsized when all passengers moved on one side to take a selfie, reports The Independent.

Another 11 people were rescued by authorities, and police in Indonesia announced they would begin an investigation to see if there was negligence from those managing boating in the local waters.

At the time of the incident, there were 20 people in the boat, although the boat has a capacity for up to 14 people and was driven by a 13-year-old.

“The cause of the accident was overcapacity. The 20 people took a selfie on the right side, then the boat lost its balance and capsized,” central Java police chief Ahmad Lutfi told AFP.

After the accident, police ordered the closure of tourist resorts in the Kedung Ombo Basin, “because they do not comply with health and safety protocols and violate the specified visitation capacity,” Lufti said.

Search and rescue services in Indonesia are still trying to find two people lost in the waters. One of the two missing persons is the youngest child of a man who survived but lost his wife and two of his children, aged 4 and 7, in the accident.
