The rate of infection with COVID-19 is 0.55% in League 1. “It makes sense in the given context”

There were 4,360 coronavirus tests in League 1 and 57 cases of COVID-19 occurred, and of these, 23 were false-positive, leading to an infection rate of just 0.55%, Mediafax notes.

“What happens in the case of athletes is logical in the given context. It is good that they have been tested and monitored because we are talking about a team sport, where clearly there is a higher risk of transmission for the virus, in relation to the population,” said Adrian Marinescu, an infectious medicine doctor at the Institute “Matthew Bals”.

He added: “From my point of view, I would talk about the strict positivity rate for on-demand testing. Otherwise, I’d think they’re targeted tests, and I’d think they’re in a separate category, so I still have a clear picture. In recent months, it is clear that transmission is more accelerated in the population.”

The Ligue 1 footballers have been the most tested Romanians in the last two and a half months. They went through eight rounds of tests between 15 May and 30 July. In total, 4,360 tests were done in the 14 teams in the Romanian championship, of which only 57 were positive. That’s an infection rate of just 1.3%.

But there were also false-positive tests. CFR Cluj announced on July 28th that the tests of 23 players, carried out at a clinic in Bucharest, were flawed. This means that the total number of cases in League 1 was only 24, and the real infection rate in football is 0.55%.

On Thursday, the Strategic Communication Group reported 1,345 new cases and a 5.57% increase across the country.
