Begu (31 years old, 63 WTA) secured the victory after an hour and 25 minutes and equalled his best performance at Roland Garros, which was achieved for the first time in 2016. The final eights represent the best performance of the Romanian woman at grand slam tournaments, having another presence in this phase in 2015, at the Australian Open.

Irina Begu started the match with Jeanjean (26 years old, 227 WTA), debutant at Roland Garros, and led 5-0 in the first set, won 6-1. Begu made it 5-1 in the second set, but allowed his opponent to come close to a single ball (5-4), missing three match balls. In the end, the Romanian won 6-4, coming back in the last game at 0-30.

Jeanjean had 11 break balls but only managed to capitalize on one.

Begu finished with 26 straight winning balls, twice as many as Jeanjean (13), with fewer unforced errors (21-27).

Irina Begu has secured a cheque for 220,000 euros and 240 WTA points, and her next opponent will be the winner between American Jessica Pegula (number 11 seed) and Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (number 24 seed).
