The Kenyan Federation (AK) announced it had lost “a gem, a star of athletics with lightning-fast rise.” Her husband is suspected of stabbing her: “Tirop was found breathless in her home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband. We are still working to discover more details about her death.”

“We pray that God will give strength to the family at this difficult time,” the Kenyan Athletics Federation wrote.

Tirop became world cross country champion in 2015 at just 19 years old. At 10,000 m, she was a bronze medalist at the 2017 World Championships and the 2019 edition.

In August, at the Tokyo Olympics, she finished fourth in the 5,000 meters and recently, in Herzogenaurach, Germany, set a world record in the 10 km on the road.

Last week, Agnes Tirop had attended the valencian half marathon.
